He possessed a mystical nature, and during the solar eclipse of January 1, 1888, he fell ill with fever, subsequently experiencing a profound vision. He saw the whites disappearing, the resurrection of all dead natives, and the land returning to the stewardship of the Native American. The new religion unsettled the Anglos and they actively campaigned against it, culminating in the tragic massacre at Wounded Knee.
